"O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, “There is no salvation for him in God.”

Psalm 3:1-2

I'm sure we can all read this verse and think to ourselves "same here!" But, I imagine you haven't had your own son try to overthrow your kingdom and then try to kill you? This is context for this Psalm of David's, his son Absalom had gathered a following for himself and is trying to overthrow his father's kingdom. The story of David's family after his egregious sin of adultery and murder gets really hard to read! David's son Amnon rapes his sister, then David's son Absalom kills his brother for raping his sister, he get's a big head about it and thinks he needs to be the king of Israel so he starts a political campaign to gain followers and then seeks to have his father killed. I have had enemies, but I can't imagine your own children wanting you dead.

This is the setting for what David sings/prays in Psalms 3:3-4

"But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill."

We can be confident in times of trouble that we are shielded by God against the deceitfulness of our enemies, seen and unseen. We can be sure that there is salvation for us no matter the sin!

Brothers be faithful to the Lord, He IS faithful to you!
