Do not envy the wicked man’s things.

Proverbs 24:19-20

19 Fret not yourself because of evildoers, and be not envious of the wicked,

20 for the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

I've found it too easy for myself to see the things people have think to myself "If only I had that!" It can be as simple as seeing a guy on a better motorcycle than mine or as unfortunate as seeing a beautiful woman not wearing much and wishing I could have her. What is vital for us to remember is that not all that glitters is gold. The things that catch our eye could be an innocent thing or something that would take wickedness to gain for ourselves. Sometimes we see a "wicked" man having things we wish was ours. Maybe it's not that this guy stole these things or committed a crime to be where he is, but most often the wickedness at play is putting a reconciled relationship with Jesus at bottom of the priority list.

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"

Matthew 16:26

Instead I want to encourage you to be a man who seeks to gain eternal things! Again, I get it, the things of this life sure are shiny and appealing! But, the things here and now are going to fade away, but the things we do to gain God are forever!

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,

Only what’s done for Christ will last.

And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be,

If the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee.
