Becoming a Titus Man.....
When a football coach is instructing a player on how to perform in a drill or on a play, they expect those watching to pick up on the instruction as well. No coach wants to have to continue over and over with the same instruction. That is one way we can look at the book, or letter, Titus in the New Testament. Paul was instructing Titus, but really he is instructing all of us.
Titus was a student of Paul. At one point he is sent to the island of Crete to oversee and organize the churches there. Paul writes him a letter, instructing him on what makes a leader, how men and women are to live within the Church and within society. If you've never read Titus, now is a great chance. And because of its length and straight ahead teaching, Titus is the perfect place to go on a regular basis for devotional time. Titus is its own 5 minute devotion!
A quick breakdown of Titus leads us with instructions for overseers/elders. While many may not see themselves in that role at this point in their lives, you never know. Paul certainly didn't at one point in his life. And really, who can find fault with living under these guidelines anyway? Being a faithful husband, Being a good father. Not overbearing or hot tempered but upright and self controlled. Being a Titus man also means having the courage of conviction to stand up to those who are trying to deceive others in faith.
Chapter 2 instructs us that the older men and women are to be worthy of respect, self controlled, sound in faith and love and reverent. That way, they can be an example for the younger people of the church.
Chapter 3 instructs us to be good citizens and to be peaceable. To be considerate and gentle toward others while reminding us that at one time we were foolish and disobedient. Paul instructs to stay away from foolish arguments and to not be divisive.
Yes good brothers, these are great guidelines to live by. But don't take my word for it. Read Titus. It's the perfect 5 minute devotional for all men!
